HOW YOU DRAW A CARTOON CHARACTER

This is my last blog on this subject. I will be talking about the shading if you want to shade. When you shade you want to know your lights and darks and make sure you have a subtle dark to light. You don't want harsh lines going from dark to light; you want to shade lightly then you want to press a little harder to get a darker shade. In my picture you cant tell the difference in the ear but it has a slight change. When shading you want to never smear the paper. If you smear the paper right away erase the smear. If you don't it can stain the paper so you cant erase it. Shading is very difficult because if the shades don't match it will look bad.

Shading in Jerry. I advise you to just shade the ear and or nose. Shading the ear is difficult because you don't know where the lighting is so be creative and kinda make your own light. I made it coming in from the left side of him so his nose will be lighter on the left then the right because there is nothing blocking the nose; but the ear is different. The ear is blocked my the inside of the ear so it will be darker on the "blocked" part.

This time I will show you what mine looks like. The things that I used for the shading was just a normal mechanical pencil. I would prefer you not to use a mechanical pencil because when you try to erase the pencil mark, the page will be dented and it wont look as good as it could be using a regular pencil or some sketch pencils. Some brands of the sketch pencils are Faber-Castell, Dixon. The brand that i usually use is Staedtler. I use these pencils a lot. I have drawn people with them and statues and just some little cartoons. I feel the best way to concentrate while drawing is having some of your favorite music to get your artistic flow going. When I draw I have to keep my mind clear of everything around me even if its just a paper.

The next thing you want to do is draw the ears. I feel like the ears are the hardest part because you have to get them almost exactly where they are supposed to go. When doing the ears you want to draw lightly a half circle. When you are done with that you want a little curved swirl at the top of the right ear. When you think you got that done you now want to shade it all in, or you can color it in. On my next blog I will show what the outline should look like.

How to draw a cartoon character part 3

The next part I am drawing of Jerry is the mouth. You want to make a sideways 3. Where the curves are a little over the eyes. When you do this you want to make sure you don't go over the pupils. At each end you want to curl it in a little. When you are done with that you draw 2 whiskers on each little curve. With the whiskers you barely curve them down.

The next cartoon I will be drawing is Jerry from Tom and Jerry. What I am starting off with is his head. You first want to make a circle. Once you are done with the circle you want to draw a LIGHTLY curved line down and a curved line side ways. When you are done with that, right above the line that is going sideways you want to draw two arcs right next to each other. Those will be the outline of the eyes. When you are done with that you want to draw little arcs at the right bottom corner of the eyes, and shade that in. And those are the eyes. My next step will be in my next blog.

Being a artist you have to learn a lot of designs. I haven't gotten cartoon characters down just yet. Have you thought about drawing a cartoon character? Like Tom and Jerry,  or Popeye? Have you ever wondered how the artist drew the character? I'm starting to learn how to draw the cartoons. I'm going to start off simple with drawing TOM AND JERRY. When you start to draw the cartoon you should consider looking at a picture of that character. First I'm going to draw Jerry. I feel like he's the easiest out of both. Drawing cartoons you have to start off with the outline. Take your time and kind of measure out the lines and where they should be. Once you get the outline, start with the eyes make the eye almost the same as the picture your looking at. Then start from the bottom of the eyes. Then start going down. Once you get done with all the details, look at the original picture then the drawing. If you think its off, correct it. Once you are done you can now color it if you want to. I shaded mine in.
